The Tax Reform Agenda
More Than Ever—The Time is Now!
Susan Zimet, Ulster County Legislator and Co-founder of the Omnibus Consortium, spearheads the Tax Reform Agenda - a group dedicated to formulating real-world solutions to the property tax crisis facing New York homeowners.
The Issue
New York State has the highest taxes in the Country - 79% above the national average. Homeowners are already at the breaking point, and New York's burdensome property taxes are pushing families over the edge.
Albany’s excuse has consistently been “We cannot afford to fund property tax relief. We have no money.”
Well, we have the answer: Wall Street.
Wall Street's Sweetheart Deal
New York stockbrokers have been getting over $15 billion a year in tax rebates from the State - money that rightfully belongs to the you and me. Even a modest reduction in the rebate rate would provide more than enough to institute fair property-tax reform that would enable New Yorkers to keep their homes.
The Coalition
Through our tireless efforts, we have built a statewide coalition of property tax reform groups, fiscal watchdogs, education advocates and unions. And now, together with Frank Mauro of the Fiscal Policy Institute, we have drafted a short-term relief/long term tax reform bill - the legislation we long-suffering New Yorkers have been waiting for.
The Bill
Both Senator Liz Krueger (S4239) and Assemblyman Steve Englebright have sponsored our legislation (A8702) in the Senate and Assembly, repectively.
-
The bill creates a "circuit breaker" that limits property taxes to a percentage of income, providing immediate relief to overburdened homeowners.
-
The bill acts as a foundation for the long-term equitable tax reform New Yorkers are desperately in need of.
But the bill has not come up for a vote.
We need tax reform immediately. The Taxpayers of New York can no longer afford the inaction of our State Legislature.
Take Action
The Tax Reform Agenda is networking with tax reform groups throughout the State of New York. Together, we will be a powerful voice to pressure our elected officials for real reform. Our families need our help now.
We have the power, we just need to come together and make our voices be heard. Join us in making a real difference in the lives of New Yorkers.
New Yorkers in Crisis
We understand and appreciate that New York State and virtually all the other States are facing very difficult budget situations. And while it is essential to focus on these immediate challenges right now, that does not mean we should not be thinking long term and thinking strategically regarding what we need to do in the future.
The people of New York need tax relief.
The Tax Reform Agenda along with all others in the Consortium will be working tirelessly to pass the Omnibus Tax Reform and Relief Bill this legislative session.
Please take the time to learn about this important Bill. And then join us to save our homes and families.
